Misdemeanors
In California, persons convicted of a misdemeanor may be fined and sentenced up to one year in county jail. Examples of misdemeanors include drunk driving (DUI), petty theft, and driving with a suspended license. Sometimes, the court may be willing to grant probation to a defendant rather than sentencing the defendant to jail. To meet the probation requirements, the defendant must submit to drug and alcohol testing, attend certain types of classes, complete a minimum amount of community service hours, and meet weekly with a probation officer assigned to his or her case.
A misdemeanor offense can affect many aspects of your life. If charged with a misdemeanor offense, you should contact an attorney to discuss your case and understand your legal options, rather than facing the court system on your own.
